What is the History of the GAO TAEM?

This strikingly spotted cat is still available in Thailand today. However, I'm told finding a male is more difficult. The Cat Book Poems confirm their ancient history. They possess the same wonderful personality of all 'Thai Cats".

From the "Cat Book Poems" (as translated in Martin Clutterbuck's book "The Legend of Siamese Cats", e-mail: martin@amanuensis.th.com.  To order contact Martin at
62/35 Soi Rung Petch

"Alternating circles, neck, head and hind thighs
Plus two shoulders and front paws
Black covering the ends of both
Nine horse-like black spots on an all white background."

ALSO:

"One with white body, fine all over, and black in nine places
Like a piebald horse, whoever feeds it well, will trade swell
Much riches and treasures will be found, everything will come
That person is a rich man, for a good cat benefits its owner."

ALSO:

"A white body marked in nine placed, two eyes a green light
cries loud and echoing, a tuneful sound for men and women
This cat in whoever's house, despite difficulty will be a master,
Visiting lords, with great gain, trade will not lose."

ALSO:

"The cat named Nop (Nine), white body
two eyes shining green like jewels
two ears black and white, come to black
four legs, shoulders black, and two back spots."

ALSO:

"A white-bodied cat with nine marks-search it out
Rind it in the bid country-rice paddies
Has the value they say of black sapphire
Divide by these words, wealth in the land."

ALSO:

"A white bodied cat with nine marks-search it out
Find it in the central country-behind the paddies
Protects against danger, turning it to nought
Buy at great profit to amass wealth."
