HISTORY
This domestic cat is a replica of the Serval cat of the
African plains from which it originated. It is closer in size to it’s Serval
ancestors than the Domestic cat. The first recorded Traditional Savannah was the
result of a breeding between an African Serval and a domestic shorthair in the
1980’s by breeder, Judee Frank. The
resulting F1 female kitten was named “Savannah”
after the grasslands or savannahs of Africa
where the Serval originates.
Interest in the breed took off when Patrick Kelly purchased
one of “Savannah’s”
kittens from Ms. Frank. Other breeders who became involved were Joyce Sroufe and
Lorre Smith. It was Joyce who became very successful with breeding and is some
times listed as the founder of the breed.
It was her diligence that helped her produce more Traditional Savannahs
than any other breeder at the time, including being the first to breed down to
later generations to produce fertile males and provide breeding females to other
interested breeders. Males became fertile at the fifth and sixth generation
bench mark. The first public presentation of the breed occurred in Westchester, New
York in 1997, causing a well spring of demand for pet
kittens.
PERSONALITY
This unusual, beautiful and exceptionally graceful cat is
affectionate and outgoing. The purpose of this breed is to be a spotted, exotic
cat with a domestic cat temperament.
Much like a family dog, they will follow their humans around the house with
curiosity and interest in what is happening around them.
The combination of elegant, exotic
appearance and inter active personality makes the Traditional Savannah an
outstanding companion.
HEALTH
Coming from a cross between a wild African cat and a
domestic cat, they have good health and vigor.
